Mayra Alvarado is a 2022 AD18 Teacher of the Year who is dedicated to protecting and serving the needs of our community. She teaches and lives in East Oakland and has been teaching in Oakland for the last 8 years. Her journey in public education has been fueled by a deep commitment to community engagement, equality, and the well-being of all Californians.

As a daughter of immigrants and first-generation college graduate, Mayra  brings an important perspective to the table. Working in schools and serving in various leadership roles within her union, she understands the challenges facing everyday Californians across the state and how important it is to support candidates for public office that uplift working families.  In her 8 years of teaching she has served on the Instructional Leadership Team at her school, as a new teacher induction program mentor, and as a cooperating teacher to student teachers at San Francisco State University and UC Berkeley.

In addition to her involvement in these various roles, Mayra is also a leader within the teacher’s union, Oakland Education Association (OEA). She serves as an elected member of the executive board of OEA, a California Teachers Association State Council delegate, and an Alameda Labor Council delegate. In these roles, she advocates for and centers the needs of all students and their communities. She hopes to bring this transformational leadership experience to the Democratic Central Committee.

Mayra extends a heartfelt invitation for you to join her on this transformative journey toward a more inclusive, equitable, and prosperous California by voting for her and the rest of the Unified Voices for Democracy slate for the Alameda County Democratic Central Committee.
